Alton Towers have stated the £16 million ride will be the world’s first roller coaster experience fusing wood with fire.
Sitting on the former site of The Flume, Wicker Man has been officially revealed as the name of the project known for the past two years as ‘Secret Weapon 8’.
The ride has been built by American roller coaster manufacturer Great Coasters International, and will feature its Millennium Flyer train designs, custom themed to the ride experience. When the ride opens, it will be the first new wooden roller coaster in the UK for 21 years.
The resort have marketed Wicker Man as a ‘world class experience’, with recent teaser videos alluding to the theme and nature of the ride.
The ride’s key promo, designed by American illustrator Kyle Lambert, showcases the behemoth central theming piece standing at 57.57ft (17.55m) tall. Guests will pass through the structure, which has been wrapped and hidden away from the public during the main construction of the ride, three times whilst special effects will set the structure alight.
In a statement, Bradley Wynne, Creative Lead at Alton Towers Resort commented: “We are delighted to finally be announcing Wicker Man as the latest ground-breaking thrill attraction from Alton Towers Resort for 2018. Guests will be ‘chosen’ to take part in a celebratory ‘rite of passage’ as they race through the flaming Wicker Man.
“We hope visitors will be blown away by Wicker Man’s breath-taking scale whilst the primal essence of the wooden coaster and astonishing effects will leave them delighted, exhilarated and eager to ride again.”
The ride is set to open in Spring 2018.
