According to reports, The Smiler’s track has suffered a structural problem which has led to the ride closing once again.

RideRater reports that a bolt has sheared, causing a gap of about 25mm to appear between two sections of track.

Lynne Skeels Tweeted from the queue line: “in the q for the smiler-hears a huge bang-opps a bolt has fell out the track – #smiler now closed”

No one has been injured but the ride remains closed.

An Alton Towers spokeswoman told Airgates: “Yesterday morning, Sunday 21st July, in line with our standard procedures, Alton Towers Resort closed The Smiler to investigate a small piece of debris that had allegedly fallen from the track.

“At no time was any visitor at any risk, and 48 guests on the ride at the time were safely disembarked. As the health and safety of our guests is our primary concern, the ride will remain closed whilst the Resort’s technical team investigate.”
